FORMER Berry competitor Shane Rose has capped off a truly sensational year by being named as the Eventing Rider Of The Year at the New South Wales equestrian awards held in Sydney on Friday night.
The awards, held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, were presented by Sports Minister Kevin Green.
Rose was born in Berry and moved back to the area in 1993, first representing Australia a year later at the age of 21.
In 1996 he was selected for the Atlanta Olympic Games, but suffered the disappointment of his horse going lame.
In 2003, in partnership with Nikki Chapman, he set up Bimbadeen Park at Werombi, a racehorse breaking and pre-training property, run in association with a performance horse business.
The most memorable achievement for Rose however, was his silver medal effort at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 as a part of the three-day eventing team.
Mr Green paid tribute to the success of NSW and said the state was continuing to improve on its impressive track record in the sport of equestrian.
“I congratulate all the nominees and recipients of tonight’s awards on their outstanding achievements,” he said.
“It is a pleasure and a credit to Equestrian NSW to see that the sport has truly overcome the Equine Influenza crisis to become stronger and more resilient than ever.”
There were a wide variety of awards received on the night, with both junior and senior riders gaining recognition for not only their efforts in the saddle, but for their overall contributions to the sport.
