BRIDGET Mullany has only been cycling for 15 months and in that time she has already developed into a State champion.
At Dubbo earlier this month Mullany took out the under 13s NSW Girls Scratch Race Track Cycling title and also gained a bronze medal in the sprint championship.
It has been a successful start to the 11-year-old’s career.
She was the under 13s Southern Division Road Champion in 2008, took at the Junior Girl Champion at her Illawarra Cycle Club and finished with two bronze medals and a gold in the Southern Division Track Championships.
“My dad and brother had been riding for about a year when I decided that I wanted to do it as well,” the West Cambewarra resident explained.
“I just loved it, I like all cycling, but derby and scratch are probably my favourites.”
Despite racing against kids almost two years older than her, Mullany was able to stick at the front in both the scratch and derby races.
“I had to compete in a lot of races, so I was pretty tired by the end,” she said.
“In the final of the scratch there were three of us sprinting in the last 100 metres, it was so close they had to go to a photo finish, but I was just ahead.
“In the final of the derby there were four of us across the track, one girl dropped out and the finish was really close.”
Mullany’s father Wal went on to say it you could have dropped a hanky over all three of them, that’s how tight it was.
The Dubbo competition was the last track race for the season and she will now focus on her road cycling as she looks to defend her Southern Division Road Champion title at Goulburn.
There are two main championships approaching for the TIGS student, the Junior State Tiles in late June and the Country Championships to
follow.
