Norths hold on to nab first innings points

01 Feb, 2010 08:52 AM
North Nowra-Cambewarra 7/242 d Berry-Shoalhaven Heads 6/241 dec.

The win has catapulted Norths into fourth place ahead of Nowra, but it with the bye in the final round, may be hard pressed to retain the spot.

Resuming at 0/4 in reply to Berry’s 6/241 declared, Norths lost Karthik Selvakumar (3) who was bowled by Glenn Brandon with the total on 13 in the 11th over.

The chase started to gain momentum when Matthew Fairweather joined opener Alexander Peters and they added 46 for the second wicket.

Fairweather looked in great touch, scoring 28 off 37 balls with four boundaries.

He then edged a ball from Berry skipper Brad Carey and keeper Aaron Basile accepted the chance.

Peters played a solid knock of 32 before he went the same way, with the total on 76.

This brought Graham Davidson in to join Nick McDonald, and they gradually got the scoreboard moving.

Each side had one point when the 60th over was completed with the score on 3/141.

Davidson made 54 of the partnership of 83, the knock including five boundaries and coming off 112 balls - his third half-century of the season.

He was bowled by Carey, and McDonald went the same way after hitting two boundaries in 41.

In his next over Carey bowled Matt Hickmott (14), and with the total 6/179, Berry appeared to be on top.

There was a further twist as Dean Tyson and Hugh Gillen added 57 for the seventh wicket.

In his best first grade knock, Gillen scored 31 off 35 balls including two fours and one six.

He was bowled by Brandon, with the team within sight of victory.

It all came down to the final delivery, but Tyson (25) and Nigel Rowan (1) saw their side home for its second victory of the season over Berry.

In a lion-hearted performance, Carey sent down 27 overs for his 5/69, while Brandon offered best support with 2/36 from 12.
