Matthews hungry for success in 2010

08 Feb, 2010 08:45 AM
BOMADERRY fast bowler Jordan Matthews has exceeded even his own expectations this year, and it’s only February.

Heading deeper into what he hopes will be a full first grade season with defending premiers Bomaderry, the 16-year-old also hopes to play at representative level next summer.

“My goal is to make the Southern Country side, hopefully I’ll be able to put some good performances together to get into that team,” he said.

“I’m also hoping to play for Country NSW.”

Playing in the top grade in the Shoalhaven cricket competition in your mid-teens is an achievement in itself and Matthews admits he thought modest returns with the ball at that level would be enough to satisfy his own requirements.

“At the start of the year, playing firsts, I thought if I took a couple of wickets in each game I’d be doing well,” he said.

“But I’ve done a lot better than I imagined I would at the start of the year and I’m really enjoying playing with the Bomaderry team and getting a lot out of it.

“Obviously my goal there is to make the finals at the end of the year and hopefully win the premiership.”

Enhancing his bowling versatility is something else Matthews is keen to do, with plenty of training being done to improve what is already a lethal repertoire.

“I’m aiming to get into the gym to improve my strength and gain more pace,” he said.

“I’m working on different deliveries, just all round stuff to make me a better bowler.”

“This year I probably haven’t had as much work as years gone by, which has helped me do more work in the off season, which is good for me.”

In an excellent campaign so far for the dominant Bomaderry side, Jordan has produced two separate sizzling spells of 6/13 and 4/4 and looks a good bet to be a spearhead of the team’s success for the next few years.

He was also a member of the team that claimed the one-day title recently.

Working hard and performing consistently will ensure this talented young man enjoys a bumper 2010 and beyond.

“Hopefully I can do my best, put in some good performances and improve this year,” he said.

“Then I plan to work hard over the off season and come back again better than ever in 2011!”
