BOTH chasing teams scored comfortable wins in last Sunday’s Shoalhaven District Cricket Association Twenty20 semi-finals at the Berry Sporting Complex.
While no play was possible on that turf wicket on Saturday because of the previous days’ rain, the Berry club presented a good strip for these important fixtures.
Fighting effort by United
ULLADULLA United’s top order put up a fighting effort in the early part of the match, but Berry-Shoalhaven Heads emerged as a convincing winner.
Sent in to bat, United had 31 on the board in the fifth over when Brad Dudgeon took a one-handed catch at mid-on from the bowling of Luke Bramley to remove Jason Linke (15 off 14).
Robert Cooke (7) started well but was run out in the eighth over at 45.
Opener Terry Dorrell top-scored with 29 (off 34) before skipper Jeff Dudgeon had him caught by David Crapp at mid-wicket.
Scott Bowman raced to 11 off eight balls with one four and one six, but Bramley then had him caught by Aaron McElhinney at long-on.
He added 20 with Aaron Basile who saw the total pass 100 before he was bowled by Simon Bartlett for 23 off 31 balls.
Ben Hendrie (2) followed in the next over, bowled by Chris Agar.
Berry tightened the screws in the final over by taking two further wickets.
Scott King (1) lofted Bartlett to McElhinney at long-on, and then Leigh Pearson (13) was run out in the scramble for runs.
The visitors ended with 8/111 with Bramley, Bartlett and Agar each taking two wickets.
Berry started its chase briskly and the total had reached 38 in the fifth over when Kerry Penfold (17 off 16) was bowled by Chris Barford.
Josh O’Keeffe was then joined by Jeff Dudgeon and their stand of 47 took the team closer to victory.
O’Keeffe had scored 44 off 43 balls with four fours and one six, when he was caught by gully fielder Sam Lee off Scott King.
Dudgeon was run out for 25 (off 20 with one six), but his team was then close to its target.
David Crapp (16 not out) quickly ended the match in the 15th over with seven wickets in hand.
Bowlers set up victory
BOMADERRY earned the right to defend the trophy by accounting for Ex-Servicemen in the second match of the day.
Ex-Servicemen won the toss but it was Bomaderry spearhead Stuart Jeffrey who struck with wickets in each of his first two overs.
He clean bowled Chris Bramley (1) and then caught and bowled a skied shot from Paul Meakins (7).
When Jason Bell came into the attack he soon had skipper Daniel Gleeson (2) caught by James Dean in the gully.
Shane Halliday hit one four and one six in 17 (off 18 balls) but then drove Jarryd Sue in the air to mid-off where Michael Lees took the catch, and it was 4/30 in the seventh over.
Warren Ganderton (6) was bowled by Matthew Lees, and in the next over Sue had Brady Spelta (1) caught by Greg Wellington at fly slip.
Reeling at 6/46, Ex-Servicemen were lifted briefly by Rod Davis and Matt Ganderton.
Ganderton (7) was caught at mid-wicket by Jeffrey off spinner Michael Coulter, and Peter Holland was run out without facing a ball after a deflection off the Coulter cannoned into the stumps.
Rod Davis made top score of 29 (off 33) with one six and one four, but was then bowled by Coulter in the penultimate over.
He had added 20 with Shane Phillis whose unbeaten 20 off 19, helped the team post a total of 9/96.
Best bowling figures were returned by Jeffrey who returned 2/12 from his four overs, but in missing a catch near the boundary he was struck in the head.
Taken to hospital he had six stitches to a cut on the eyebrow, but is reported to be recovering well.
After taking the new ball, Coulter also bowled late in the innings to return 2/13 from his four, and Sue also picked up two wickets.
Bomaderry lost an early wicket when Sue (2) was caught by Phillis at mid-wicket during Rod Craig’s first over.
Coulter cracked two boundaries in 15 (off 17) before Spelta had him caught by Meakins in the gully.
Bomaderry took control while Dean and Bell were adding 50 from eight overs for the third wicket.
Dean had hit three sixes in 28 (off 31) when he was bowled by Bramley.
In his next over Bramley had Paul Sawkins (2) caught at point by Phillis.
When Matt Ganderton took a catch at mid-wicket off Phillis to remove Bell (31 off 34), Bomaderry was a nervous 5/85 in the 18th over.
However Michael Lees and Nick Jennings showed no nerves as they took their team to victory by five wickets with nine deliveries remaining.
Bramley was the pick of the bowlers with 2/12 from 3.3 overs.
