THE Kennedy’s Tours Shoalhaven State League Basketball women kick start their 2010 campaign this weekend with a doomsday double road trip.
The Tigers, who are returning to the competition in 2010, start with the long haul out west to take on the Dubbo Rams and the Bathurst Goldminers.
After a 12 month hiatus from the competition the Tigers are back in the league keen to repeat their success of 2007-2008 when they won back-to-back titles.
A new look team has been assembled in 2010 which is set to make an impact once again on the NSW State Basketball League.
Under the guidance of former Australian player and Wollongong Hawk Ray Hannett the girls have been hard at it at training on Wednesday nights at the Tigers Den.
Coach Hannett is looking forward to the season and has no real expectations of his team other than taking each game at a time.
The Tigers have managed to put together a reasonable line up with former ABA players Shelley Bates who has had stints with Bankstown Bruins, Sydney Comets and the Sutherland Sharks and Melissa Holcomb, who has played all her career with Illawarra.
2008 League MVP and AllStar Five member Kate Denyer is back alongside 2007 championship power Forward Misty Hayburn and off guard Carla Balsar.
The return of former Shoalhaven juniors Rachel Marron and Mary Jane Toole has bolstered the line up and adding in Kelly Hunter, Kirby Nielsen, Kaitlyn Brodie this team has the potential to win yet another championship making it a fifth crown in a decade.
The Tigers will be looking to establish themselves early, hoping to come away with two of the toughest wins in this league on the road.
Both Dubbo and Bathurst have been playing together for some time and will be expecting the Tigers to come out hard in both games.
The Tigers have always struggled with this double for whatever reasons but know what it means to win on the road.
Coach Hannett will be relying heavily on his more experienced players to get the team across the line but knows that with little preparation, his rotations will be quick and fast, so he will be asking that every player is prepared to play in the style of basketball he has been enforcing at training each week.
Tip off in Dubbo is 5pm tomorrow, Saturday and 11am on Sunday in Bathurst.
The Kennedy’s Tours Men season tips off next weekend March 20 in Illawarra while the women will be playing an exhibition match at the Tigers Den on Saturday afternoon against the NSW Country under 18 women’s team which are coached by former Shoalhaven State League championship coach Scott Balsar and features local sensation Kate Bellamy.
