NOWRA Athletics Club member Michaela Quinn has again showed her class with three gold medal performances at the NSW Country Track and Field Championships in Wollongong.
She totally dominated the under 15 girls’ division and in the process ran a personal best and set two new championships records in her division.
Michaela dominated her opposition to win the 15 years 1500m in 4 minutes 41.20 seconds, which was a PB and a championship record.
She was first in the 15 years 3000m in 10m 04.99s which was also a championship record.
The following day she also claimed the 15 years 800m in 2m 20.28s.
In a remarkable performance she led from start to finish in all three races, including the 800m, which is the weakest of her three events,
Showing great fighting spirit, Michaela fought off the eventual second placegetter who had moved up onto her shoulder with 200m to go ready to sprint past, but Michaela ran away from her to finish two and a half seconds in front.
The quality of her two championship record runs on Saturday can be appreciated when you see that the previous records were set in 1999 by Lisa Corrigan, who has since gone on to be Australian champion and to compete at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympic Games.
At this stage it appears her performances in the 3000m are the second and third fastest times for her age group in Australia this summer season.
Michaela’s next challenge will be the NSW Junior and Youth Track and Field Championships in Sydney on February 12-14.
Following that will be the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney from March 11-14.
