TOMERONG Hall, built in 1926, has been the setting for many a good time over the years and a group of committed residents have made sure that it will remain that way for years to come.
The hall was in danger of being eaten away by white ants due to the lack of air space between the front of the building and the ground.
“We knew that something had to be done,” said Chris Senior, a resident of Tomerong for 25 years.
At a meeting of the hall committee, it was decided to raise money for the work by selling inscribed pavers to be laid at the front of the hall.
The council also gave $3000 as a heritage grant towards the work.
After months of hard labour by a willing team of volunteers, which included excavating 15 tonnes of soil from underneath the building to create
a crawl space, the hall is looking
fantastic.
With the personalised pavers and a new logo, designed by artist Suzi Krawczyk, the hall has had a facelift that not only has solved the problem
of white ant attack, but is proving to
be a historical memento of the
village.
“Without the help from the volunteers and businesses, we would never have been able to do this,” Sandra Lee, one of the organisers said.
“It just shows what community spirit can achieve.”
