Divers Senior Constable Steve Why and Constable Craig Dodd attached large flotation devices to the vehicle to refloat it.
The vehicle was then towed by a team from the Port Kembla Water Police to the Greys Beach boat ramp where it was winched onto the back of a local tilt-back tow truck.
This also proved to be a challenge as the wreck was continually getting stuck on the concrete lip of the ramp, forcing the divers to reattach or relocate the winch lines.
Some delicate manoeuvring was required before the river would finally give up its captive.
