Tiny school beats the big guns in Wakakirri

THE Jervis Bay Public School community is still celebrating after its great results in the Wakakirri festival.

Despite being the smallest school in the regional section of the national dancing, singing and story-telling festival, Jervis Bay Public got three awards.

The school came second overall for its ongoing relationship with Booderee National Park, was runner-up in the community section and won the sustainable/recycling props section.

Teacher Alyson Whiteoak said the 22 students did themselves proud.

“The school before us had 160 students and the school that followed us had 180 students but we filled that stage just as well,” she said.

All the students from years four to six were involved.

The last time the school took part was about six years ago, according to Ms Whiteoak.

The national final will be held in November and Ms Whiteoak hopes Jervis Bay Public will get to take part.

The students will hit the stage again next Thursday when they perform for the community.

Meanwhile, Sanctuary Point Public also achieved a great result, being placed equal third.
