NOWRA Public School students got active last Friday as part of a government initiative designed to get primary school children physically active.
More than 600 students participated in a sports gala day run by the Australian Sports Commission as part of the Active After School Community program.
“[The program] gives traditionally non-active kids a way to get involved and become active,” said regional coordinator of the scheme, Glen Hayward.
“The premise behind this day is that kids have fun and get energetic.”
The children had the opportunity to experience a range of sports from tennis and cricket to traditional indigenous games such as gorri and koolchee.
The program supplied the school with experienced coaches in all sports with representatives from Cricket NSW and the Department of Sport and Recreation.
“It was really fun,” said Nowra student Tyla Walker.
“It’s great to try all the different things.”
Nowra Public School won the chance to host the day through a competition run at the Nowra Show.
Students had to complete an obstacle course then answer a short quiz on healthy eating.
The program is run across Australia in over 3000 schools and after school care services including more than 20 in the Shoalhaven area.
