SHOALHAVEN will host the 2011 Local Government and Shires Association, an event civic leaders hope will bring up to $2 million into the local economy.
It will be a landmark event, showcasing for the first time the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre’s suitability as a conference venue.
The decision to choose the Shoalhaven as the venue for the 2011 conference came after intense lobbying by Mayor Paul Green and his deputy, Councillor Gareth Ward. The other contenders were Dubbo and Orange.
“We will have more than 600 delegates visiting our sensational city,” said Cr Green.
“We are hoping the conference will be a springboard for future conferences and events to come to the entertainment centre.”
Cr Green said delegates would be accommodated across the city in bed and breakfasts, holiday homes, hotels and motels.
Yesterday in the NSW Parliament, Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock moved a motion congratulating the Mayor and council for its successful bid.
“This is an opportunity for Shoalhaven to show off its pristine coastline, national parks, marine parks and the unique Shoalhaven,” she said.
“Local businesses will benefit immensely with hundreds of delegates from councils all around the state converging on the South Coast.”
