Ian Ross Curran, 19, of Hockey Street, East Nowra, was seen riding the blue mountain bike on the corner of the Princes Highway and St Anne Street, Nowra, on November 25.
At the time there were warrants out for Curran’s arrest, Nowra Local Court was told on Monday, so police indicated he should stop the bike.
However Curran ran off, the court was told, leading to a lengthy pursuit before he finally stopped and was arrested.
Police claimed Curran admitted knowing the bike was stolen when he bought it from a man in Junction Court for $80, with the man stating it had been stolen from Wollongong.
Evidence to the court stated the bike was identified as being stolen from Uncle Peter’s a few days earlier.
While pleading guilty to receiving stolen goods, Curran was also sentenced over a charge of malicious damage for which he was convicted at an earlier hearing.
That charge related to an incident on October 19 when Curran was allegedly seen kicking a glass panel of a door to a Kinghorne Street business.
Twice during the following hours police chased Curran on foot through Nowra’s central business district, but each time he eluded them according to police.
He was finally arrested early the following morning, with police saying he was “extremely intoxicated” at the time.
Defence solicitor Mark Douglas from the Aboriginal Legal Service said Curran had drifted in with the wrong crowd this year, accounting for “an explosion of offences in the year 2000”.
“A short, sharp shock in the form of a jail sentence may realign my client’s thoughts,” Mr Douglas conceded.
