Senate inquiry to snare rogue installers

02 Nov, 2009 10:07 AM
PHIL Dale does not want to see another James Hardie asbestos-style episode in the future, which is why he supports the inquiry into the Federal Government’s $3 billion home insulation program.

The Senate will investigate claims the system has resulted in deaths, injuries and is being rorted.

Mr Dale, who owns Radiant Skylights and Insulation, said the system was definitely being rorted and the inquiry was needed.

Mr Dale has heard numerous stories of people trying to take advantage of the grant and said the Shoalhaven was not immune.

“There are rogues out there everywhere and they are just after a quick buck,” Mr Dale said

He said some operators even used Google Earth to measure a roof.

“They would not even know what is inside the roof. They would not even know if it already had insulation,” he said.

Mr Dale said anyone could install insulation but making sure it met the safety guidelines took proper care and training.

There is a wide range of safety issues that needed to be taken into account, including being aware of exposed wires and keeping insulation away from downlights and chimney flues.

The rogues aren’t interested in safety issues, according to Mr Dale.

“I have heard of people knocking on someone’s door and saying, ‘We are here now and can install your insulation’,” he said

“You just don’t know what they are putting into your roof.

“I have heard that they are coming down here with the rubbish insulation that they could not get rid of in Sydney.”

Mr Dale said because you are working in a hot confined space it was also important not to rush the job and take the proper rests, which some operators did not do.

He said the government should have taken its time with the program, made sure there were tougher insulation training requirements and that the suppliers had time to get the right products.

Mr Dale said suppliers had been so inundated that insulation was now almost impossible to buy.
