PURPLE, pink and white balloons were released on Wednesday as mourners remembered three members of the Bridge family killed in a fiery accident on the Princes Highway last month.
David Bridge, 47, and his daughters, 13-year-old Jordan and 11-year-old Makeely, of Ulladulla, were killed when their car collided with a petrol tanker near East Lynne, north of Batemans Bay, on December 28.
Mr Bridge’s wife Debbie remains in a critical condition at Concord Hospital being treated for burns suffered in the accident.
The driver of the tanker, David Carolan, from Narellan Vale, died at the scene.
Friends and family gathered at the Mollymook Surf Life Saving Club to remember the three.
Mourners were told of the family’s love for the beach, spending time there together since moving to Ulladulla two years ago.
Members of the girls’ netball team, the Ulladulla Waves, dressed in uniform and formed a guard of honour as Jordan and Makeely’s coffins were brought out of the club.
Mr Bridge’s four brothers paid tribute to a “gentle giant” who loved the coast and was a great support to his wife and children.
Colin Bridge said the five spent many great times growing up together. He described his brother as a loving husband and supportive father.
“All of us saw that in David and we know in our hearts that’s what he is doing right now.”
The service was recorded for Debbie Bridge to watch as she progresses with her recovery.
Mrs Bridge sent a message to those gathered.
“Today she wanted to convey to all of us she still has (the) two most beautiful girls inside and out,” her sister Sheree Montgomery said.
Ms Montgomery and her husband Frank were travelling behind the Bridge family at the time of the crash.
Mr Montgomery battled the flames to try to save his nieces from the fiery wreck. He suffered burns to his hand in the frantic aftermath to the collision.
Jordan and Makeely were remembered as happy girls who excelled in sport.
The two girls died at the scene, while David Bridge died at Royal North Shore Hospital on January 2, succumbing to extensive injuries.
Five other people were injured in the collision.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow was played as the service ended.
The family attended a private cremation service afterwards.
The Bridge family released a statement thanking the community for the many messages of support and well-wishes for Mrs Bridge.
