A DISUSED airfield near Huskisson could be reactivated if pilot and aviation enthusiast Glenn Crees’ hopes come to fruition.
The airfield is in an old pine forest about one kilometre west of the Huskisson township.
Mr Crees, who holds a lease for that portion of the land, plans to get the field up to a standard that could accommodate light and recreational aircraft.
“My wife Lyn and I had been looking for a site for a few years to do this when we came across the site near Huskisson with an existing airfield on it.
“It is an east-west, north-south grass airfield which would only be open to private light aircraft.”
Mr Crees said the facility could also be available for emergency services such as the air ambulance and the Rural Fire Service.
He said the aircraft flight boundary known as the Visual Flight Rule (VFR) lane cut across part of the field which meant all aircraft wanting to use the facility must get clearance from HMAS Albatross whenever the Navy base was open.
Mr Crees said he didn’t think noise would be an issue for residents in the area as civil air traffic must already travel down the VFR lane.
“Landings and take-offs would be over private property, or over our only neighbours, which is national parks or the Husky tip,” he said.
Mr Crees said he had met with council’s economic development manager Greg Pullen, who indicated council would want to see that an aircraft could actually use the old airfield first.
A spokesperson said council was looking into the land clearing.
