Nowra in pole position for racetrack

Nowra in pole position for racetrack

05 Jan, 2011 07:23 AM
SHOALHAVEN could become a car-racing centre, with the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport interested in a top track being developed west of the town.

During the recent Shoalhaven City Council meeting, council’s financial director Peter Dun confirmed Australia’s peak motor sport body had shown an interest in developing a racetrack off Main Road 92.

Cr Greg Watson was quick to extol the virtues of an expanded motor racing industry in the Shoalhaven, saying it could bring “many millions of dollars” to the region.

“This is a major industry that could bring an enormous amount of wealth to the area and jobs,” Cr Watson said.

“These opportunities only come along every so often.”

He said the proposal centred in building a racing centre and major regional facility at Yerriyong, near the existing motocross track.

As many major regional racetracks were being closed or facing the prospect of closure to free up land for redevelopment, Cr Watson said there would be plenty of money available to build a new facility on Nowra’s outskirts.

While there was a rumbling of disquiet among some at the meeting, and Cr Amanda Findley even spoke about people racing “goat carts”, Cr Gareth Ward was also quick to defend exploring the motor racing options.

“This is about the everyday Aussie wanting to enjoy their motorsports in the Shoalhaven,” he said.

Council voted to set up a committee comprising economic development manager Greg Pullen, tourism manager Tom Phillips, Roger Walker, Paul Sutton and Trevor Bridge to investigate the feasibility of building a new raceway near Nowra.

this is a fantastic idea and will bring in so much money to the town. im in a number of car clubs and having to drive all the way to Sydney or Goulburn to race on their tracks can be a bit of a turn off. there are lots of car clubs around the Shoalhaven and an endless number of enthusiasts that will spend the majority of their weekends making the most of the track.

You only need to look at the success of the recent speedway meeting on the 1st of january to see how much economic benifit will come from another motor racing track in the local area.Good for business good for the whole town.

How good is this? An additional avenue for recreation and education for our younger citizens, also the many jobs generated by such a proposal will benefit the whole community.

What a great idea. We need such a venue in the area as it will bring many financial and social bebefits to our area. At the moment our closest tracks arer either Sydney or Golburn. Futhermore one of Sydneys best tracks (Oran Park) has been recently closed to make way for more housing.

We desperatly need a race track closer to us and now is the time.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME !!

I regularly travel to Wakefield Park (Goulburn) and Eastern Creek to participate in club level events. It would be great to see a track in Nowra. I would definitely use it.

Anything that will bring something new and improved to Nowra should be accepted with nothing but positivity from the community, I think. Bring it on!

This track is something that a lot of people will use and it will create a whole new industry in the area. As a long time Kart racer myself I have visited every small and large town and city in NSW and across Australia and left my fair share of money in these places. The people who will race at these places are not hoons that I know some people are scared of. We race karts and cars worth tens of thousands of dollars and we don't want them wrecked and we don't do things that endanger ourselves. Most of the RACING community are busines people with money to spend and who want to enjoy our weekends doing what we enjoy. Racing. After racing is finished we go out for dinner and stay in your hotels. We spend money in your shops and often support local charrities with race events. Anyone scared of hoons and the like should just cme out to Orange, Lithgow, Goulburn, Canberra and come to a race meeting and see the peole who are REALLY involved in the sports and be a part of it rather than fighting it. I lookforward to coming to your town and staying, eating, spending and racing once this great looking track getts up and going.
