Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock and Cr David Bennett condemned the recent attacks and called for Shoalhaven City Council and the state government to improvement security and upgrade the site.
Mrs Hancock is exploring potential findings through the Land and Property Management Authority while Cr Bennett made a notice of motion to strengthen security and upgrade the grounds.
Mrs Hancock said the attacks were unacceptable and extraordinarily disrespectful.
As a former history teacher she also mentioned the historical value cemeteries have in our community.
“I am utterly appalled at the recent attacks on the Nowra Cemetery and believe those responsible are gutless thieves,” Mrs Hancock said.
“Cemeteries across the state play a valuable role in our community and I acknowledge the important historical value of each cemetery across the South Coast.
“The Nowra Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries on the South Coast, its historical value is immeasurable, and plays an important role in the lives of those who have lost loved ones.”
Previously, Shoalhaven City Council voted down the option to secure the site and only open it to the public at certain visiting hours.
Mrs Hancock said she would like to see the consideration of security brought forward, given the recent repeated attacks on the site.
Cr Bennett said vandalism at cemeteries was unacceptable.
