Nowcon will be held at the Wesley Centre in Berry Street, Nowra on Saturday, October 1.
Geeks, comic fans, movie buffs and anyone who has ever leapt tall buildings in a single bound or is faster than a speeding bullet will be there, dressed as their favourite super hero.
That alone makes this a great family event but organiser Dan Tribe has a few surprises in store for the day.
Amongst all these capes, flashy costumes and fancy weaponry there has always been one constant, the Doctor.
“Dr Who is a weird one because he’s popular across all ages,” Mr Tribe said.
“We get teenage girls through to middle aged men and all ages between interested in Dr Who.
“I guess it’s because he’s been around so long. And everyone has their favourite Doctor, or one they don’t like the most.”
The focus of Nowcon is about getting as many people as possible to attend and have fun. People are encouraged to dress as their favourite character and a Cosplay competition will be held on the day for the best outfit.
“It’s not about what’s at Nowcon, it’s about who is there that makes it. If everyone goes and has fun then it’s a success.
“So far we know we’ll have at least about 30 people dressed up.
“Dr Who would be a pretty easy one to come as, you just need a long scarf, a trench coat and bad hair,” Mr Tribe said.
Hugh O’Dempsey from North Nowra has been watching Dr Who for at least 45 years.
“I remember when I was about 10, Dr Who was on at 7.30 one night a week,” he said.
“It was my bedtime and from where my bedroom was I could peep up a gap through the hall and the lounge into where the TV was and watch it. But as soon as there was a movement on the lounge I’d be straight back into bed.
“I think the show has lasted so long because of its realistic pretext.
“It’s just feasible enough that it could be true without being too silly.
“Dr Who has grown with us, it’s modernised as we’ve grown up, it’s moving with the times, but not getting silly and over gizmoed.
“And there’s no language, sex or violence – it’s a good old show.”
As for his favourite Doctor, Mr O’Dempsey’s first reaction was Tom Baker, “he was always very good”.
“But more recently David Tennant had good expressions, they’re probably the two that stand out or me.
“The sidekicks have always been pretty crucial, even though something terrible usually happens to them.
“Karen Gillen, who plays Amy Pond, currently is an absolute trick but Sarah Jane Smith with K9 was a good one too,” he said.
A black and white art competition is being run as part of Nowcon – entry is $3. For more information go to geek culture Nowcon on Facebook.
