Hot day at the races

04 Nov, 2009 08:22 AM
THE temperature soared to 38 degrees and a hot wind whipped through the crowd, but no matter what the weather, the only place to be on Melbourne Cup day is at the races.

The Shoalhaven City Turf Club’s Archer Raceway was packed yesterday, with about 3000 frocked up fillies and sartorially splendid blokes through the gates.

“It’s a bigger crowd than expected, and hotter than expected,” said Shoalhaven City Turf Club’s CEO Lynn Locke with a laugh.

“Everything’s going very well. I think the people who enjoy it most are the ones who’ve just turned up and are having a great time.”

Results from the races held on Tuesday at the Archer Raceway will be in Friday’s South Coast Register.

FASCINATING: The fillies in the field fashion finalists line up, as Charlie Burleigh, of South Nowra, looks on. Her amazing, homemade fascinator took out the best headwear.
