Gareth Ward braces for criticism

10 Feb, 2012 07:59 AM
AFTER pushing for the proposed southern bypass route to be considered, Kiama MP Gareth Ward was not the most popular person attending Wednesday night’s public meeting in Berry.

“I’m sure there’s probably a few people in the room who want to tar and feather me right now,” Cr Ward told the gathering.

He said it brought him no joy to cause new uncertainty about bypass options but he could not ignore potential savings of about $50 million identified when previous research on southern options was reviewed by civil engineer Bruce Ramsay.

“These were savings to the taxpayer that I was not aware of,” Mr Ward said, “and it would have been irresponsible of me to not have it further examined.”

That was why he pushed for the Roads Minister Duncan Gay and the RMS to look into the route proposal with a full cost analysis.

Mr Ward said he was “happy to accept any criticism that comes my way” for the impact on the community caused by reopening discussions.

The RMS plans to hold question and answer sessions in Berry on February 16, March 1 and March 21.

RMS officials said they were doing their best to keep the process open and transparent.

They established working parties on Wednesday night to work through specific issues on the preferred northern bypass route including a truck stop at Austral Park Road, and urban design issues including North Street, Mark Radium Park, bridges, interchanges, cycleways, local traffic arrangements and recreations areas.

Ok guys, this is how it goes.

When commitments are given, state or local, and then those commitments then take a low priority, what happens.

The spin emerges,ie,we have been advised of the potential cheaper option,so we have a responsibility to explore that option.

Sounds good, but it is simply a ploy to save face, once the bean counters re-asssess your priority.

The Link Road,Nowra`s Big W ,South Nowra Highway Extentions and the Berry Bypass.

You see the South Coast gets punted again, whilst the consultants get rich.

Stuff you all I say!!

Bruce Ramsay, the engineer mentioned in this story about the bypass backflip, has just told 2ST's Turk Talk program that the preliminary costings for both the orthern and southern options were "line ball". So talk of cost saving is now being questioned.

And there John, you have just highlighted another problem. How are people supposed know which is up and which is down. We get told different stories every day (and that's not a shot at the media). Little wonder that politicians are not trusted and liked even less.

As Cumbo said, the consultants continue to fatten their wallets.

Guess the way this projects going, we won't see the bypass happening in the next 20 years!

Well surprise surprise the ass clowns stick their fat fingers in and stuff it all up, what are the 'experts' doing while all this is going on. Don't expect to see this road in a hurry peoples...

Okay guys – a civil engineer of 40 years experience (who spent some time working for Roads Authorities) walks into my office and says you could be blowing up to $50M of taxpayers’ money if you don’t re-examine the southern route. If I had swept that all under the carpet – and it were revealed that I did – I trust you’d all be calling me corrupt. I make no apology for seeking the truth and the facts before spending other people’s money. BTW – we’re delivering on the first $500M upgrade of the Princes Highway – starting in August!

Pollies Fiddle...Rome Burns....

Wonder when they're gonna play a different tune?....this one's getting predictable...

"Round and round the Parliament

The monky chased the weasel,

The monkey thought he'd finally won

Pop! Goes the weasel.

2 Million swiped from Visioncare

& more from Foster Parents,

That's the way the money goes,

Pop! Goes the weasel"

Rob the people bleed us dry,

It's Everything with Nothing.

Wag the dog & spin the lies

Pop! Goes the weasel"

"Magic mirror tell me today, have all our pollies had fun at play?"

If the RTA wants to make the process transparent can they at least make Mr Ramsay's proposal available to the community so that the community may assess whether Mr Ramsay has a viable option or is simply wasting tax payers time and money. If it is proven to be a complete waste of time and money then I would like to think that Mr Ramsay should be held accountable for his actions.

So far we have a synopsis which is very short on detail but full of opinion. We all have opinions on the subject but not all of us seek to hold the community to ransom.

Mr Ward, where in the "opinion" piece from Bruce Ramsey does it state a figure of $50m? Nowhere, it is simply conjecture on his behalf. The previous southern options were costed at 1.5 times the northern route and you have rushed in and demanded millions be spent re-examining it without even doing the most basic of sums. Unless the northern option is less then $100m there is no saving to the tax payer.
