A NOWRA man allegedly tried to do a runner from corrective services officers on Monday.
Sentenced to 12 months in jail, Shaun Patrick O’Neill, 23, of Blackmore Close made it to the back yard of Nowra Police Station before being arrested.
O’Neill had just been convicted for breaking and entering, and stealing computer equipment and two pots of anti-ageing cream.
At 3.30am on November 5 last year, a Nowra accountancy firm was broken into.
A window was smashed with a brick inside a shopping bag, and a laptop, monitor, leads and other computer accessories were stolen.
A forensic examination of blood found at the scene yielded O’Neill’s DNA profile.
On April 2 police went to Mannus Correctional Centre where O’Neill was serving a sentence for a similar crime.
They interviewed him and he admitted breaking the window.
However he said the next thing he remembered was being in possession of the stolen property in a nearby street.
O’Neill said his ice addiction prevented him recalling more.
He said he dumped the computer gear in some bushes and didn’t keep any of it.
Police found all the stolen items, except the laptop, near bushes in Graham Street.
Due to bloodstains and water damage, none of the items were serviceable.
The accountants’ premises were insured, but they were after compensation of $400 for the excess.
