Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Darth Vader, Bleach, Samurai X, Dr Who and dozens of other animated characters will hit the streets – but don’t be alarmed – they will all be your friendly geeky types intent on impressing their peers and judges alike.
They will be a part of Nowcon, the city’s first geek get-together, and the costume characters will be taking part in the Cosplay competition.
Organiser Dan Tribe of Not Just Comics in Nowra is unsure exactly how many Cosplay competitors will enter, but he thinks it could be up to 50 – maybe a lot more.
“We had an open day here a few months ago and 30 people turned up in costume,” he said.
“I’m hoping we’ll get a lot more this time.
“I would like to impress upon the good citizens of Nowra not to be too alarmed when they see these impressive characters wandering the streets.
“They won’t hurt you.”
Nowcon will also feature an art competition, a guitar hero competition and a World of Warcraft trading card game competition.
Mr Tribe’s inspiration in organising the conference – to be held at the Wesley Centre on October 1 – follows similar events held in Sydney.
He got tired of making the six-hour round trip and thought the time was ripe to hold an event in Nowra.
“I thought, why can’t we get all the geek-types together and have some fun here?” he said.
“Who knows, it might mean we attract a few dollars for businesses in town from outside as well as providing a fun forum for all us geeks.”
He said people into the culture “love to dress up”.
Geek culture, he says, taps into pop culture.
“I guess it’s best described as being into something that’s really uncool.
“We like things that are not mainstream.
“If you’re a bit of a geek there will definitely be something for you to enjoy at the conference.”
As for the culture itself, what’s the best selling category at Dan’s store?
“The American super hero stuff is the most popular but there is an increasing interest in the Japanese manga comics, particularly among the girls.
“It is really starting to close in,” he said.
