About 7pm a white Ford Falcon travelling south along the Princes Highway, Bomaderry, was allegedly driving erratically on the incorrect side of the roadway before returning to the correct side at the intersection with Illaroo Road.
However while getting back on the correct side of the highway the Ford allegedly collided with two other cars as they were travelling south, and about to cross the bridge.
As a result, one of the vehicles was shunted off Nowra Bridge and into the Shoalhaven River.
A 34-year-old local female passenger was able to get out of the vehicle before being helped ashore by a fisherman.
She was taken by ambulance to Shoalhaven Hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition.
The 30-year-old man driving the submerged vehicle died in the river.
He is yet to be formally identified.
The driver of the Ford, a 27-year-old Bomaderry man, was taken to Shoalhaven Base Hospital in a stable condition with a broken ankle and facial injuries. He also underwent a mandatory blood test.
The driver of a third car, a Toyota Corolla, was not injured in the crash.
Police investigations are continuing and anyone with information about the incident who hasn’t yet spoken to investigators is urged to contact Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
