For the past few years Jervis Bay has been the crown jewel in the Shoalhaven property market but that is all about to change.

One of the region’s most prestigious homes has just gone on the market with a million-dollar price tag and already buyers from Sydney are eagerly inspecting the heritage home.

Located on the Princes Highway near Bomaderry, Illowra was built in 1907 for Mark Fairles Morton, who was elected as state member of the Shoalhaven in 1901 and was in Parliament until his death in 1938.

The house is renowned not only for its timeless appeal but also for the decades-old gardens.

In fact, Mark Morton is best remembered for his contribution to conservation resulting in Morton National Park being dedicated to his memory.

For 82 years the house remained in the Morton family until it was bought in 1990 by Dr Andrew Moss and his wife, Jennifer.

Over the past 10 years the Mosses have faithfully restored the house to its original condition, as well as adding their own personal touches to the property including a tennis court and swimming pool and extending into the ceiling, creating more living space.

Clive Radburn of Raine and Horne, Berry, is selling the property on behalf of the Moss family and said he could not remember a property of this calibre in Nowra previously on the market.

“I am unaware of any property that has accelerated to that price in this area,” he said.

“The property will probably be sold to people from Sydney or a business which could possibly operate from the premises.

“It would be ideal for a home-based business such a secretarial business or for professional rooms,” Mr Radburn said.
