Anti-tip group prepares to fire last salvo

20 Oct, 2010 06:44 AM
COMMUNITY group ShUT (Shoalhaven’s Unwanted Tip) is gearing up for its final salvo in the battle to stop a huge tip being established at Tomerong Quarry.

The issue is to be decided by the Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel when it meets tomorrow evening, and ShUT members are calling for community support at the meeting in Shoalhaven City Council’s chambers.

ShUT has registered several speakers who will address the panel on alleged inaccuracies in the Environmental Impact Statement, inadequate transport links to the site, the lack of justification for the new tip, and the threat it would provide to a nationally listed plant species, melaleuca.

ShUT has called on other community members wanting to present new information to the panel to register their intent to address the meeting by 4pm today, on 9383 2121.

Last week Shoalhaven City Council unanimously rejected the proposal after a detailed investigation by staff.

ShUT Chairperson Tom Donahue called on the JRPP to accept the council assessment and reject the application outright.

i have lived in this area since 1973 and idont agree with a lot of the progress that has been made we had tank water and pit toilets when we first moved here they say that the bay has been poisoned by all the sewerage plants and run off from the drains.i worked in a saw mill in tomerong for a few years and no body complained about the trees that were cut down or the damage that was being done to the envoronment back then, i say let the tip go ahead

You are one of a few in favor of a Toxic Industrial Waste tip! If the proponant gets his licence, there is no gurantee of what sort of waste will go in there! And what sort of repercussions we will be dealing with in the future! As for past actions that was then! and this is now! Now people are more aware of environmental needs and trying to help create a more sustainable future for our children! They deserve to be left with a better legacy than a polluted and fragmented environment to live in! Things are a changing for a better future! I do hope that you begin to see the good things that are happening in our environment! This is no time to be a pessimist! We can create Heaven on earth if we all choose to! Luv Trishwildfire
